Belledune, NB. – The Belledune Port Authority (BPA) recently joined other Atlantic Canada ports on a trade mission promoting the Atlantic Gateway in Brazil.
The Atlantic Gateway is an integrated sea, air, rail and road freight transportation network that feeds into the economic heartland of North America. It is the competitive and reliable transportation system for moving goods to and from the dense population belt situated along the Canada-USA border.
The Atlantic Gateway involves Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. It includes ice-free deep water ports, access to North America-wide road and rail systems, airports, storage and other facilities, and access to North America’s interior market.
“The mission was very promising. The potential for moving goods between the Port of Belledune and ports in Brazil is tangible and potentially very promising, especially considering the advantages we offer,” says Jenna Doucet, BPA Director of Marketing. During the mission she was joined by BPA President & CEO Rayburn Doucett.
“The Port of Belledune has a lot to offer especially when it comes to moving bulk products,” she continues. “Belledune has land available for development and ample storage space. Our goal in Brazil was to find trade opportunities. The Port of Belledune has many advantages to offer companies shipping bulk, mining products and to support modular fabrication opportunities in Brazil.”
By sea there are sound reasons for developing additional trade with Brazil. The Atlantic Gateway ports are closer by sea to Brazil than New York and Miami are due to curvatures of the earth. Brazil already has connections to Atlantic Gateway ports; this mission was an excellent occasion to expand on the existing connections and develop new connections between the two regions. It is anticipated that Brazil will make significant investments in its port facilities and infrastructure during the coming years.
The ports of Saint John, Halifax, Sydney, Strait of Canso, and Dalhousie also participated in the trade mission with the Port of Belledune.
