Appointments to the Belledune Port Authority Board of Directors

OTTAWA — The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointments of Mrs. Alberta Buttimer of Beresford, New Brunswick, and Mr. George Smith of Baie-Sainte-Anne, New Brunswick, to the board of directors of the Belledune Port Authority. Each appointment is for a three-year term, effective December 1, 2011.

“I am pleased that Mrs. Buttimer and Mr. Smith have agreed to serve on the Belledune Port Authority’s board,” said Minister Lebel. “These appointments will bring the authority a wealth of knowledge and experience in business planning, fundraising and accounting.”

Mrs. Buttimer holds a bachelor of commerce from Mount Allison University and is a member of the New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants. She has been the owner and manager of a public accounting practice since 1998. She was also the senior manager for audits at KPMG, where she worked for over 11 years. Her community service is extensive, and she has served as a member of the Finance Committee for the 2003 Canada Winter Games and as advisor to the Junior Achievement of Bathurst organization.

After serving as an RCMP officer from 1975 to 1981, Mr. Smith is now an instructor in NBCC Miramichi’s Criminal Justice/Police Foundations programs. He demonstrated managerial and entrepreneurial skills while operating two franchise restaurants from 1989 to 2008. His community involvement has included serving as a member of the board of directors for the Historic Water Street Development Board, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the Miramichi Chamber of Commerce.

The Belledune Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established to manage the Port of Belledune, under the Canada Marine Act. Seventeen CPAs now make up Canada’s national port system. The CPAs are non-share capital corporations incorporated under the Canada Marine Act that are of strategic significance to Canada’s trade. Their effective operation contributes to Canada’s global competitiveness.
