BELLEDUNE (CNB) – The grand opening of a new $9-million pellet plant was celebrated today in Belledune by the Shaw Group.

Premier Shawn Graham, Minister of Environment Roland Haché, Shaw Group CEO Bert Frizzell, and other dignitaries were in attendance.

“Today’s celebration is a fine example of businesses willing to invest and set up in New Brunswick, and in northern New Brunswick helping to move our province toward self-sufficiency,” Graham said.

The Shaw Resources pellet plant employs 15 people, and has a capacity to produce 75,000 tonnes of pellets annually. The pellets are destined for the European market through the Port of Belledune.

Under the $30-million Restigouche-Chaleur Economic Development Fund, the Province of New Brunswick invested $1.4 million toward construction of a 4,095-sq.-metre (45,500-sq.-ft.) multi-purpose, weather-sensitive warehouse to accommodate the storage and export of wood pellets at the Port of Belledune.

“It is particularly rewarding when one of our company’s new operations helps contribute to a sustainable future for a rural community,” said Frizzell. “The Shaw project team appreciates the support and encouragement it has received from the provincial and municipal governments on the various regulatory and administrative aspects of establishing the new plant.”

The Shaw Group is one of Eastern Canada’s leading diversified companies. Its primary businesses are in natural-resource-based manufacturing and community development through a number of divisions, subsidiaries and joint ventures, including Shaw Brick, Shaw Pipe, Shaw Resources, Clayton Developments, Prestige Homes, Shaw & Shaw, and Ven-Rez Products Ltd. The company has been recognized as one of Canada’s 50 best-managed private companies for the past seven years.
